Old-school blues with soul

Martin McNeill is a slide guitarist and singer based in south Essex, performing as a solo act and bandleader. Rooted in traditional blues styles, he also draws on classic soul and gospel tunes, especially in his solo sets.

Martin has just been named “instrumentalist of the year” in the GSMC Music Awards (Jan 20, 2022).

The band Martin McNeill’s Bottleneck Blues often features internationally-renowned harmonica player West Weston and/or pianist Tim Huskisson. The regular rhythm section is Roy Webber on drums and JJ Zarbo on double bass. The band forged a strong reputation through 13 years of regular sessions at Southend’s sadly-missed Railway Hotel. Martin performs Bottleneck Blues gigs in various formats, from duo up to five-piece.

Outside of Essex, Martin is best known as a solo act, performing in pubs, clubs, theatres and at events such as the Rye Jazz & Blues Festival.

Martin’s CD Cat Squirrel was shortlisted in the 2020 UK Blues Awards after receiving good reviews and strong airplay on blues radio shows.

His latest CD, recorded in July 2021, is Sweet Soul Slide. It highlights the more mellow side of Martin’s repertoire, featuring classic tunes such as Dock of the Bay, Rainy Night in Georgia, Dark End of the Street, My Girl and Wind Cries Mary.

Initial copies of Sweet Soul Slide were sold in return for donations to Cogwheel Counselling, raising more than £1,100. The fundraiser is now closed and the CD can now be bought direct from Martin for £8 including postage (£11 sterling for non-UK sales).
